“I thought for 10 years I was going to get fired from Days,” Flynn shared. “I never once changed one thing in my dressing room because I was convinced that they would tell me I was leaving the next day.”

The pressure escalated following the tragic loss of his great-grandmother, whom he described as his ultimate soulmate aside from his wife, of course. The grief hit him hard.

“I wasn’t living a very healthy lifestyle,” Flynn admitted. As his personal struggles began affecting his time on set, show executives informed him that they were writing the character off temporarily. However, Flynn already knew that something had to give. After all, he had married only a year prior and knew his life was spiraling. So, he had to do something about it.

To that end, he took control of his destiny. “My last day, I drove from there to rehab, and that’s where I got sober,” he explained. “Once you clear all those cobwebs and start to figure out that grief and all those issues—where that fear was coming from, and that pain and that anxiety—was when I kind of was like, ‘Oh wait a second, I do deserve this. I do deserve to be happy. I’m good at it, I think.’ And luckily, they gave me another chance to come back.“

When he returned to set in peak physical and mental health to visit colleagues, producers immediately noticed his transformation. Flynn said he was so fit. While there, a producer caught up with him and the talks of his return began.
