Born Tony Dean Giri on May 29, 1947, in Utah, Giri grew up in a Mormon household with three sisters. His father worked in construction, while his mother hoped he would eventually become a teacher.

The original plan was reportedly for only 13 weeks. Instead, Luke became the role that defined Giri’s life and transformed him into a daytime television icon.
Luke’s relationship with Laura, played by Genie Francis, became one of television’s most famous romances, although its beginnings remain deeply controversial.
Their early storyline involved an assault that was later reframed by the show as seduction, reflecting the very different standards and storytelling approaches of daytime television at the time.
Decades later, General Hospital revisited that painful history and allowed Luke to confront the consequences of what had happened.
